Based on ITU / IEEE / ANSI / TIA standards, Passive Optical Networking (PON) is a high-performance, high-density, gigabit based optical LAN solution delivering high speed data, voice and video to the desk, room or building.

PON design is based around a point to multipoint architecture of fibre to the desktop utilising an Optical Line Terminal chassis (OLT) and Passive Optical Splitters (unpowered).

The design is extremely flexible as the 100m rule of the copper channel does not apply. With distances of more than 20km achievable, the requirement for multiple rack locations is eliminated, thus saving money on space, power and access layer switches.

Benefits

  • Current PON equipment provides Carrier Class 99.999 reliability.
  • Scale up to 7,168 users from a single chassis (9U of rack space), and provide parallel redundancy.
  • Offers an eco-friendly networking solution due to reduced power and space requirements.
  • Fibre optic provides enhanced security over copper cabling.
  • Provides future proofing for up to 30 years, with the bandwidth capacity of single mode fibre yet to be determined!
  • User bandwidth is easy to distribute and manage.
